That's a Wrap!

As we wrap up the school year, we want to take a moment to share some celebrations and extend our heartfelt thanks.

I would like to thank all of those involved in planning and orchestrating all of our end of year celebrations were, I felt honoured to be included in them. Thank you Lisa Manzini for organizing and running sports day. Sports day at EGHE is extra in all the best ways and that's because of Lisa's passion for it. Thank you to the PAC for the most amazing carnival. I had so much fun painting faces and the reason I could relax and participate in this way was because you all had it so dialed. Thank you especially to Jillian Barr who headed up the organization and running of the event. I might be biased but it really felt like the best carnival ever. Thank you to the grade 6 students, teachers, choir, and Anthony Joseph for the beautiful grade 6 leaving ceremony. This group of grade 6s is such a special group and we are so honoured to be sending you off to middle school and beyond just the way you are. I am confident that you will continue to represent the EGHE family in a good way.

Thank you all for this amazing first year at EGHE. It is a privilege to share this community with all of you. Thank you for being such a wonderful, supportive community. You're doing a great job raising good humans: thank you! ❤️

Navigating the BC curriculum for parents

It has occurred to me recently that navigating the BC curriculum as a parent can feel overwhelming. There are some resources available to help. The BC curriculum focuses on developing students as critical and creative thinkers, communicators, and responsible citizens. The BC government website provides resources for parents, including information on the updated reporting policy and curriculum updates.

Understanding the Curriculum:
  • Focus on Core Competencies:
The BC curriculum emphasizes the development of core competencies, including thinking, communication, and social and personal competencies, which are essential for student success.

  • Flexible and Competency-Driven:
The curriculum is designed to be flexible and supports a competency-driven approach to teaching and learning, allowing for diverse learning experiences.

  • Learning Standards:
The Provincial Proficiency Scale is used to communicate student learning in grades K-9, with categories like Emerging, Developing, Proficient, and Extending.

  • Communicating Learning:
The K-12 Student Reporting Policy outlines how schools will communicate student progress to parents, including written and informal learning updates.

  • First Peoples Principles of Learning:
The curriculum incorporates the First Peoples Principles of Learning, emphasizing the importance of Indigenous perspectives and knowledge.

Resources for Parents:
  • BC Gov Website:
The official BC government website provides information about the curriculum, reporting, and resources for parents.

Tips for Engaging with the Curriculum:
  • Understand the Big Ideas: Big Ideas are the core concepts and principles within each subject area.

  • Focus on Core Competencies: Understand how your child is developing their core competencies.

  • Engage with Learning Updates: Attend parent-teacher conferences and review learning updates to understand your child's progress.

  • Support Learning at Home: Encourage your child to practice skills and apply what they are learning at school.

  • Seek Support: Don't hesitate to reach out to your child's teacher, school staff, or district resources for assistance.
