Belonging at GHE

This week, all classes spent some time talking about what it means to “Belong” at Garibaldi Highlands.  At our opening assembly, each class shared their thinking about belonging and we recorded their thoughts and generated the following graphic with our students’ words: (Check more photos from our opening week theme on our “Life at GHE” page)

We would encourage our families to talk about this with your child and see what they learned about belonging at school today.

Mme Maskil’s class present their ideas on “Belonging”

“Let us find a way to belong to this time and place together.  Our future, and well being of all our children, rests with the kind of relationships we build today.”

Chief Robert Joseph

School Opening

  • On Tuesday, September 6 and for the remainder of the week, returning students will report to their same class from last year. New students to the school will gather in the gymnasium and will be provided with a temporary classroom placement.  Students are dismissed at 10:00 am and Wednesday, September 7th will be a full day with 3:00 pm dismissal.
  • All students will be placed in their new classes on the morning of Friday, Sept 9.
  • We will be contacting parents of grade 1 students on Thursday to let them know which classroom their children will be in on Friday afternoon for pick up. All parents are encouraged to plan a meeting place with their parents for pick up on Friday after school.
  • We are not able to take parent requests for classroom placement as our population is too large to be able to accommodate requests equitably and fairly. We thank you for your support and understanding.

Kindergarten orientation will take place on Thursday, September 8. French immersion orientation is in the morning and English Kindergarten will be in the afternoon.  Parents have been notified regarding your specific time slot for your child.  The orientation will be 45 minutes.  Parents do not need to stay on site during this time and there is no parent meeting planned during the orientation.  More specific information is being sent to all Kindergarten parents regarding orientation.

First Day – Monday September 12th (9-11am OR 1-3pm)

All the parents were emailed on Friday to confirm if their visit was in the am or pm. Kindergarten students coming in the morning were asked to bring a snack and water bottle and to dress for the weather as they will be going outside for recess.

First Full Day – Tuesday, September 13th will be a full day from 9am-3pm.
